**Thiruvananthapuram:** Kerala’s government schools are facing the likely loss of around 850 Lower Primary and Upper Primary teacher posts this academic year due to a sharp decline in student enrollment, according to a report submitted by the Director of Public Instruction.

The report, prepared based on data provided by Deputy Directors of Education and submitted to the Public Education Secretary, states that the reduction is linked to falling admissions in Class 1 over the past few years.

According to the district-wise figures cited in the report, Palakkad may lose 140 posts, followed by Malappuram with 136, Kollam 128, Kozhikode 77, Thrissur 66, Alappuzha 65, Wayanad 56, Ernakulam 45, Idukki 26, Kannur 20, Kottayam 18, and Pathanamthitta 15. The report also notes that more than 100 additional posts could be affected in Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod districts, but exact numbers for these districts are not yet available.

The report attributes the decline primarily to lower Class 1 admissions. It states that the total number of students in government and aided schools in the state was 35,77,837 in the 2024-25 academic year. This number has come down to 34,11,198 in 2026-27. For this year alone, the report records a decrease of 31,227 students in Class 1 admissions.

The development is expected to impact thousands of candidates on the PSC rank list who are awaiting appointments. According to the report, recruitment to LP and UP sections has currently stalled due to a lack of vacancies. It further states that while efforts are underway to redeploy teachers affected by post losses to SSA and related institutions, there is no assurance that opportunities will be available for all.

To retain existing teachers, the Public Education Secretary has informed the Minister that reducing the teacher-student ratio is necessary, the report notes. The same measure would also be required if new appointments are to be made.

The report adds that the assessment of post losses in government high schools has begun. According to the preliminary evaluation mentioned in the report, the loss in high schools is expected to be lower compared to LP and UP sections. The report also states that the exact total of post losses across both government and aided sectors will be available only after the determination of posts in aided schools is completed.
