KOTTAYAM: In an incident that has left Pala in mourning, a 71-year-old woman collapsed and died moments after bidding farewell to her husband during his funeral rites. The couple will now be buried side by side.

Shirley Kurian, 71, of Vazhayil house, Puthenpallikunnu in Pala, passed away on Tuesday morning immediately after giving what relatives described as a final kiss to her husband Kurian Joseph, 73, popularly known as Kuryachan.

Kuryachan died around noon on August 15. His funeral service at the family home was completed on Tuesday morning. Just before the body was to be taken to the church for the next rites at around 11 am, Shirley approached to pay her last respects. She embraced him and collapsed on the spot. Family members rushed her to hospital, but doctors declared her dead.

The loss of two life partners within hours has shocked the local community. Kuryachan was a well-known figure in Pala. He served as a member of the Kerala Congress Steering Committee and was also on the advisory committee of the Pala Krishi Bhavan. He was among the town’s early traders and was widely respected for his public service.

Shirley was a native of Edathua Pacha Kavil family. The couple had been married for decades and were known for their close bond.They are survived by three children: Angel Kurian, Anna Kurian and Aby Kurian. Their sons-in-law are Leo Michael Paramundayil of Methiri, John Vincent Kandirikkal of Thodupuzha, and Sona Mathew Kottarathil of Muttuchira.

According to family sources, Shirley’s body will be brought to the home on Wednesday morning at 9 am. After prayers at the house at 11 am, the funeral service will be held at Pala St. George Lalem Puthenpally. Both Kuryachan and Shirley will be laid to rest together in the family tomb at the church.

Neighbors and relatives gathered in large numbers to pay respects, describing the couple’s story as one of lifelong companionship that continued even in death.The incident has drawn an outpouring of condolences on social media, with many calling it a rare example of love and togetherness.
