**Patna:** Thirty-four students were hospitalised in Bihar’s Nalanda district after detergent powder was reportedly added to a school lunch instead of salt, leading to vomiting and stomach pain among the children. The incident took place at Parsa School, where several students fell ill shortly after eating the midday meal.

The affected students included 17 boys and 17 girls. According to reports, some students noticed an unusual smell in the food and said it appeared to have a detergent-like odour. Soon after consuming the meal, the children began complaining of stomach pain and other symptoms, with several of them reportedly vomiting.

The students were subsequently taken to Biharsharif Sadar Hospital for medical treatment. Their health condition has been reported as stable, and they are receiving medical attention at the hospital.Nalanda District Education Officer Hemchandra said that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for the incident. The midday meal at the school is supplied by a voluntary organisation. A teacher reportedly told India Today that the food had been brought from another school.

According to preliminary information, some students had complained that there was not enough salt in the meal and asked for additional salt. It is alleged that, during this process, detergent powder was mistakenly identified or handed over as salt by the teachers. The students reportedly developed health problems soon after eating the food. As the number of children experiencing vomiting increased, school authorities arranged for them to be taken to the hospital.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety and supervision of school meals. Authorities are expected to investigate how detergent powder was kept or supplied in a manner that allowed it to be mistaken for salt and whether proper food-safety procedures were followed while preparing and serving the meal.Officials have indicated that action will be taken against those responsible after the circumstances surrounding the incident are established.
