Cheppara in Thekkumkara panchayat of Thrissur district is emerging as an attractive destination for travellers seeking scenic landscapes, panoramic views and adventure tourism experiences. The tourism centre has received a major facelift following development works carried out with an investment of Rs 45 lakh by the Tourism Department. The local panchayat has also spent Rs 40 lakh to make the access road more suitable for visitors.

The highlight of Cheppara is its vast rocky landscape, which offers spectacular views from the top. Visitors who reach the upper part of the approximately half-kilometre-long rock can enjoy sweeping views of Thrissur and Wadakkanchery towns. The nearby Poomala and Pathazhakundu dams add to the visual appeal of the location. The destination is particularly attractive in the evening, when visitors can enjoy a picturesque sunset over the surrounding landscape.

Several facilities have been introduced as part of the development. Around 50 lights have been installed, while seating arrangements have been provided on the rocky terrain for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. A natural water body has also been protected and developed in a mini-dam model, adding another attraction to the site. Toilets and handrails have been installed to improve visitor safety and convenience while climbing the elevated areas.

The development of Cheppara has been planned with a focus on adventure tourism and ecotourism. The absence of an entry fee is another advantage for visitors looking for an affordable day-trip destination near Thrissur.

Cheppara is also associated with history and local traditions. The area is home to ancient muniyara, or rock shelters, which are linked to local legends that sages lived and meditated here centuries ago. Several of these structures have deteriorated over time, with two reportedly disappearing completely. Festivals were also organised at the location under the leadership of Kallampara native Sheikh Usman. Following his death, those celebrations came to an end.

A proposal to install a rope swing across Cheppara by using an iron cable has also remained unrealised. If such adventure facilities are introduced in the future, they could further strengthen the tourism potential of the destination.

The Cheppara tourism centre was developed as part of an ecotourism project and was inaugurated online by then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on February 9, 2021. Located around 16 kilometres from Thrissur city, the destination can be a convenient option for travellers looking for a short nature getaway.

An Onam Fest will be organised at Cheppara on August 28 in association with the Vazhany Tourism Centre. The programme will begin at 6 pm with cultural performances by local artists. This will be followed by a traditional folk music performance by Sunil Thozhiyoor and his team.

With panoramic views, rocky terrain, sunset vistas, historical remnants and the festive atmosphere of Onam, Cheppara is gradually gaining attention as a promising tourism destination in Thrissur. For travellers looking for a scenic escape without travelling far from the city, Cheppara offers a combination of nature, adventure and local heritage.
