Kochi: A Midnight Police Operation That Resembled a Movie Scene. It may sound like a scene from a crime thriller, but this was a real-life operation carried out by the Kerala Police. In a challenging mission that involved travelling nearly 4,000 kilometres by road, a special investigation team from Kochi traced and rescued a missing 13-year-old girl from a Naxal-affected area of Odisha.

The girl, the daughter of an Odisha-based couple residing within the limits of Kuruppampady Police Station in Kochi, had gone missing from the area. Police eventually traced her to Nabagocha village in Odisha’s Ganjam district, where she was found with a young man identified as Alok.

The girl’s parents approached the Kuruppampady Police Station at around 6 pm on August 13 and reported that their daughter was missing. Police immediately registered a case under the leadership of a Sub-Inspector and launched an investigation. Initial searches were conducted extensively in the Methala area, where the girl had been staying, as well as in nearby locations. However, investigators initially failed to find any concrete leads.

The investigation later took a crucial turn with the help of technical surveillance. Police obtained information about a person named Keshav, who was working in Salem. Further inquiries revealed that the missing girl had developed a friendship with an Odisha native working at a company in Salem.

A Kuruppampady Police team travelled to Salem as part of the investigation. However, the girl could not be located there. The investigation became more difficult when the mobile phone of the young man associated with the girl was switched off.

Following this setback, a special investigation team was formed on the directions of District Police Chief K.S. Sudarshan. The team travelled to Odisha and reached the state on August 18.Further investigation in Odisha produced a vital lead. Police learned that the girl was staying with Alok at Nabagocha village in Ganjam district.

Reaching the location, however, was not straightforward. Local police in Bhanjanagar reportedly informed the Kerala team that the area was Naxal-affected and posed significant security risks. They also advised that entering the area in police vehicles during the daytime was not practical.

The teams therefore decided to carry out the operation during the night. Eight armed police personnel were deployed under the leadership of the Station House Officer to provide security to the investigation team. The Kerala team was also equipped with weapons for protection during the operation.

At around midnight, the police travelled approximately 40 kilometres through a forested area before stopping their vehicles about one kilometre away from the suspected location. The officers then proceeded on foot through the forest in a single file.

Finding the correct house was another challenge. Alok’s residence was reportedly one of only five houses located deep inside the forest. After identifying the house, the police surrounded the premises. The operation woke residents of nearby houses, and a heated argument reportedly followed.

The girl and Alok were subsequently taken to Bhanjanagar Police Station. After completing the necessary procedures, the Kerala investigation team began its return journey with the rescued girl, completing a mission that involved nearly 4,000 kilometres of road travel. The special investigation team included Sub-Inspector K.M. Abi and Senior Civil Police Officers N.P. Bindu, Arun K. Karunan and Rajith Ram.

The operation combined technical investigation, interstate police coordination, extensive road travel and a high-risk midnight movement through a forested area. The successful rescue brought the missing 13-year-old back to Kerala and reunited her with her parents, highlighting the determination and commitment of the Kerala Police in pursuing a missing-child case across state borders.
