**Thiruvananthapuram: **Two 19-year-old youths have been arrested for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a 64-year-old tuition teacher at Vallakkadavu and using the money obtained from selling the stolen jewellery to purchase smartphones worth around Rs 45,000.

The arrested persons have been identified as Nandu, 19, of Elavungal House, Kottamonpara, Seethathode, Pathanamthitta, and Advaith, 19, of Padinjare Cheruvil, near Manpeelikkavu Temple, Chittar, Pathanamthitta. They were arrested by the Valiyathura Police in connection with the robbery.

The incident occurred at around 8 pm on the 18th, near Gandhi Nagar in Vallakkadavu. The victim, Kumari Sheela, a resident of Vayyāmoola in Vallakkadavu, had been returning home after taking tuition classes in nearby houses.

According to the police, the two suspects, who were allegedly waiting on a motorcycle while wearing helmets, approached the teacher from behind and snatched her one-pavan gold chain before fleeing the scene on the bike.

The suspects reportedly travelled through the city and continued their journey via Kattakkada, Kollam and Ernakulam before reaching Thrippunithura.

A crucial breakthrough in the investigation came after the teacher noted down the motorcycle's registration number and handed the details over to the police. Following the vehicle's trail, the investigation team traced the suspects to Thrippunithura and arrested them.

Police said the stolen gold chain had been sold at a jewellery shop in Chala for Rs 50,000. Of this amount, the accused allegedly spent Rs 45,000 on two mobile phones. Police have recovered the stolen gold chain as part of the investigation.

Following the incident and local residents' intervention, two teams led by Sub-Inspectors D.O. Dinesh and S.L. Sudheesh were formed to investigate the case. The accused were produced before a court and remanded in custody.

> Meanwhile, Sheela says the robbery has changed the way she plans to wear jewellery in the future. “From now on, I will wear imitation jewellery when travelling alone,” she said.

She said she would wear real gold ornaments only when travelling with family members. She had purchased the one-pavan chain with a Guruvayurappan locket in February using savings of around Rs 1 lakh accumulated from her tuition work.

The teacher said she was deeply saddened by the loss of the chain she had bought with great expectations. For now, she has purchased an imitation chain for Rs 250, which she says looks like gold, and has decided to use it while travelling alone.

> “Now I plan to fool the thieves,” Sheela said, explaining her decision to switch to imitation jewellery when she is on the road alone.
