**Thiruvananthapuram: **The state government is preparing to restructure the LIFE Mission housing project implemented by the previous Left government. The assessment is that implementing separate housing schemes for each category will be more beneficial. A blueprint has already been prepared to separate the housing projects for Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and fishermen communities from the LIFE Mission.

If this gets the approval of the Chief Minister, applications for new houses will be invited from the respective departments. Those who have already received houses under the LIFE project and those whose houses have been approved will continue to receive assistance under the same scheme.

The Left government had implemented LIFE Mission as a single project by merging housing schemes from various departments and the central government's share. The government has evaluated that this has resulted in the loss of special consideration that was previously available to sections including the Scheduled Tribes.

It is expected that 10,000 houses can be provided this financial year alone for Scheduled Castes through the new scheme.

The new scheme has been prepared in such a way that each house will get Rs 2 lakh more than the assistance given under LIFE. The assistance for Scheduled Castes will increase from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. For Scheduled Tribes, it will increase from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. There will be no beneficiary contribution. The Fisheries Department's project has not been finalized. The limit on the size of the house will also be removed. The only condition is that the house must be at least 450 square feet. There is no maximum limit. Under LIFE, there was a restriction on the size of the house. The recommendation is to release the funds in four or five installments. A final decision has not been taken on this.

Rs 200 crore has been earmarked this financial year for the project for Scheduled Caste communities. This will only cover 3333 houses. The calculation is that when given in installments, 10,000 beneficiaries can be given approval for houses in this financial year itself. The government's directive is that a comprehensive project is needed for the housing problems of fishermen.
