New Delhi: The number of lifestyle-related health conditions, including several types of cancer, has been increasing, with diet and daily habits playing an important role in determining long-term health risks. Colorectal cancer, which affects the colon or rectum, is one of the cancers associated with several lifestyle and dietary factors. Excessive consumption of red and processed meat, a low-fibre diet, physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption are among the factors associated with an increased risk.

Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi has shared dietary habits that he follows as part of a healthy lifestyle and believes may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. He discussed the subject in a video posted on Instagram, highlighting several foods that can be included in a balanced diet.

According to Dr Sethi, yoghurt is one of the foods he includes regularly. Yoghurt is a source of calcium and also contains probiotics, which can support gut health. He also recommends a fibre-rich diet, as dietary fibre plays an important role in maintaining a healthy gut environment.

Berries are another food he recommends because they contain fibre and polyphenols. He also includes foods such as avocados, seeds, nuts, legumes and oats in his diet. These foods provide fibre and other nutrients that can contribute to overall digestive and metabolic health.

Dr Sethi also highlighted coffee, which contains several bioactive compounds, including polyphenols. He referred to studies suggesting an association between coffee consumption and a lower risk of colorectal cancer. However, dietary choices alone cannot completely eliminate cancer risk, and individual health conditions should be considered before making major dietary changes.

Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, develops in the colon or rectum. It often begins as a growth called a polyp on the inner lining of the colon. While many polyps are harmless, some types can gradually develop into cancer over several years if they are not detected and removed. The cancer begins in the innermost lining of the bowel and can eventually spread to nearby lymph nodes, blood vessels and other parts of the body.

Several factors can increase the risk of colorectal cancer. These include certain inherited conditions such as Lynch syndrome, a history of multiple polyps, chronic inflammation of the bowel, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and diets high in red or processed meat.

Common warning signs may include abdominal pain, blood in the stool, rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, a feeling that the bowel has not been completely emptied, unexplained weight loss and persistent fatigue.

Maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly and following a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and other fibre-rich foods can contribute to overall colorectal health. Limiting red and processed meat, avoiding tobacco and moderating alcohol consumption are also important lifestyle measures.

People experiencing persistent bowel-related symptoms, blood in the stool or unexplained weight loss should seek medical evaluation rather than relying solely on dietary changes. Regular screening is also an important part of colorectal cancer prevention and early detection, particularly for people in age groups or risk categories for which screening is recommended.
