**Bengaluru:** Hero MotoCorp is set to strengthen its presence in India’s rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler market by investing up to Rs 1,758 crore ($184.01 million) in Bengaluru-based electric scooter manufacturer Ather Energy. Following the proposed transaction, Hero MotoCorp’s stake in Ather is expected to increase from 29.88% to 32.8%.

According to the company, the investment will be made through a cash transaction involving the purchase of additional Ather shares from an existing shareholder. Hero MotoCorp expects the transaction to be completed by September 3, 2026. The identity of the shareholder selling the stake has not been disclosed by the company.

Hero MotoCorp is currently Ather Energy’s largest shareholder. The latest investment comes only days after Ather allotted convertible warrants worth Rs 960 crore to Hero MotoCorp as part of a preferential issue of securities.

The investment assumes significance as competition intensifies in India’s electric two-wheeler segment. Traditional automobile manufacturers as well as newer electric vehicle companies are making aggressive investments and expanding their product portfolios to capture a larger share of the fast-growing market.

Ather Energy has been witnessing stronger momentum in electric scooter sales, with demand for its Rizta family scooter contributing significantly to the company’s performance. The growing demand has also helped Ather improve its financial position after facing losses in the earlier stages of its business.

Hero MotoCorp’s increased investment indicates its intention to deepen its presence in the electric mobility sector through Ather. The company is also understood to view Ather as strategically important for its long-term clean-energy and electric mobility plans.

Ather Energy operates as an associate company of Hero MotoCorp and focuses on the design, development, manufacturing, sales and servicing of electric two-wheelers. The company has also established and operates its own charging infrastructure to support its growing electric scooter customer base.

The latest stake increase highlights Hero MotoCorp’s continued commitment to electric mobility as the Indian two-wheeler industry undergoes a significant transition from conventional internal-combustion engines towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation technologies.
