**Kozhikode: **The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society has stated that the allegations raised against it in connection with the death of a 66-year-old man who fell into a pit dug as part of a cycle track construction near the Kannanvarky Bridge are completely baseless and factually incorrect.

The society clarified that it is not executing the construction work at the site where the accident occurred. According to ULCCS officials, the work in that particular stretch of the Alappuzha Heritage Project along the canal bank is being carried out by a private company based in Karunagappally, not by the Uralungal Society.

ULCCS said that a response attributed to Tourism Minister P. C. Vishnunath in the Malayala Manorama newspaper had stated that the cycle track construction was being done by Uralungal and that action would be taken if any lapse in construction was found. The society alleged that this fact was concealed and a false propaganda was being spread against it, even though it has no role in the construction at the accident site.

The co-operative society also refuted the allegations raised against it in the Manorama report titled ‘Iniyum Ethra Jeevan’ (How Many More Lives). Officials clarified that the accident did not occur in the area of any of its projects. ULCCS added that it strictly adheres to scientific safety standards in all its projects and urged the media to verify facts before publishing allegations. The society shared its response through social media.

Meanwhile, officials of INKEL, the government-led infrastructure development agency, also confirmed that the construction at the accident site was not being carried out by Uralungal. INKEL stated that caution ropes, visible even at night, were tied around the pit to warn people of the danger. It also questioned the Manorama report’s claim that only a plastic ribbon had been tied at the site. Authorities clarified that the project is being implemented by the Department of Tourism.

The incident happened early Saturday morning. The deceased was identified as Mahesh Manueli (66), a keyboard artist from Vadakkatayyil, Mangalam Ward. He was found dead after falling into a pit dug on the northern bank of the canal near the Kannanvarky Bridge as part of construction work on the roadside. The accident occurred while he was returning home on his bicycle.
