DUBAI: The Indian women's cricket team made a dominant start to their Women's Asia Cup campaign, thrashing Thailand by 94 runs in their opening Group A encounter at the Dubai International Stadium.Despite a dramatic batting collapse, India rode on a blistering half-century from opener Shafali Verma and a ruthless bowling performance to secure two crucial points.

Put in to bat after losing the toss, India posted a competitive 159 for 9 in 20 overs. Shafali Verma was the star with the bat, smashing 64 runs off just 36 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. She brought up her 19th T20I fifty in just 26 balls and laid a strong foundation for the Women in Blue.

India got off to a flying start with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana scoring a quick 19 off 10 balls before being run out. Debutant Pratika Rawal impressed on her T20I debut with a composed 22 off 18 balls, providing good support to Shafali. At the 10-over mark, India were cruising at 101 for 2 and looked set for a total in excess of 180.

However, what followed was a stunning collapse. Thailand fought back through off-spinner Suleeporn Laomi, who triggered the slide. India lost seven wickets for just 36 runs, slumping from 112/4 to 137/9. Laomi was the chief destroyer, returning with figures of 3 for 26, including the key wickets of Shafali, caught and bowled, and Richa Ghosh for a first-ball duck. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (5 off 9) and Deepti Sharma (5) also failed to fire.

A late cameo from Kranti Gaud, who scored 15 off eight balls, helped India reach a respectable total of 159. Sunita Chaturongratana picked up two wickets for Thailand.Chasing 160, Thailand never got going against a disciplined Indian bowling attack and were bundled out for just 65 in 16.1 overs. Only opener Nannapat Koncharoenkai offered resistance with a fighting 41 off 48 balls, hitting five fours, while the rest of the batting line-up collapsed.

Playing her 150th T20I, Deepti Sharma produced an unbelievable spell. She picked up three wickets without conceding a single run in 1.1 overs, including a wicket off her very first ball. With her final wicket of Nannapat, Deepti also became the leading wicket-taker in Women's T20I history.

Nandini Sharma claimed 3 for 18 and Shree Charani took 2 for 10, while Prema Rawat was extremely economical, giving away just 11 runs in her four overs. With this massive win, India moved to the top of Group A. They will next face Hong Kong.
