**Chennai:** A 32-year-old engineer from Tamil Nadu has reportedly fallen victim to an unusual online scam after attempting to buy one acre of land on the Moon as a unique wedding gift for his fiancée. The man, identified as Saravanan from Namagiripettai in Namakkal district, allegedly lost ₹23,000 in the transaction.

Saravanan's marriage had been arranged with a woman from Madurai. While searching online for an unusual and memorable gift for his future wife, he came across an advertisement claiming that plots of land on the Moon were available for purchase.

Believing the offer to be genuine, Saravanan contacted the address provided on the website. He subsequently paid ₹23,000 in the name of his fiancée to book one acre of lunar land.

The fraudsters allegedly sent him documents claiming to confirm the allocation of the property. According to the documents, the one-acre plot was located in ‘Statio Shiv Shakti’, the area associated with the landing site of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission.

The scammers reportedly went a step further by promising Saravanan an opportunity to travel to the Moon.However, revenue officials have warned the public that such offers are fraudulent and that people should not fall for them. Under international space law, individuals and private companies cannot legally claim ownership of land on the Moon or engage in the sale of lunar property.

Officials pointed to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, adopted under the United Nations framework and signed by countries including India, the United States and the Soviet Union. The treaty establishes that outer space and celestial bodies are not subject to national appropriation and cannot be claimed as private property.

The incident highlights how scammers are increasingly using extraordinary and technologically themed offers to target unsuspecting internet users. Advertisements promising Moon plots may appear convincing by providing certificates, maps, registration documents or references to actual space missions. However, such documents do not create any legally recognised ownership rights over lunar land.Authorities have urged people to verify the legal status of online investment and property offers before making payments, particularly when the deal involves assets that cannot legally be privately owned.
