**Kozhikode: **National Institute of Technology Calicut will play a prominent role in Kerala’s development journey towards building a knowledge-driven and technologically self-reliant state, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said. He said the institute’s technical expertise and research support would be utilised to restructure higher education in line with rapid changes in the global job market and to support future development planning.

Satheesan was delivering the Dr M.V. Kesava Rao Memorial Foundation Day Lecture as part of the 66th Foundation Day celebrations of NIT Calicut. He said the government’s objective was to transform higher education into a key instrument for social and economic development, in line with the vision of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Chief Minister highlighted the growing influence of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing and robotics. He said one of the major challenges facing students today is that knowledge acquired during their studies could become outdated by the time they graduate. Universities, therefore, need to continuously update their curricula by closely monitoring changes in the employment market, he said.

Satheesan also outlined the government’s plans to develop Kerala’s 600-kilometre coastline and ports into an integrated port-city network. The government aims to shift 50 per cent of cargo transportation to coastal waterways to reduce pressure on roads. In addition to Kochi, a cruise terminal will be established in Kozhikode to boost tourism and coastal transportation.

The state also plans to expand water tourism by connecting its 44 rivers and backwaters. An aviation hub comprising 27 projects will be developed by leveraging the proximity of airports, while a ‘Kerala Knowledge Valley’ is planned to attract world-class legacy universities.

The government will also provide technical and management mentorship to young people developing innovative ventures. A ‘Silver Economy’ initiative is proposed to connect the experience and expertise of senior citizens with the younger generation.

The 66th Foundation Day celebrations of NIT Calicut were organised under the theme ‘RISE – Research, Innovation, Startups and Employability’. Satheesan formally inaugurated the programme at Bhaskar Hall in the ABC Complex on the central campus. NIT Calicut Director Prof. Prasad Krishna presided over the function.

M.K. Raghavan MP, M.A. Razak Master MLA, Dr Subba Rao Pavuluri, founder and chairman of Ananth Technologies, NIT Calicut Alumni Association president Thankachan Thomas, Registrar Prof. Sunil Jacob John, IACR Dean Prof. Kumaravel S. and C-PRIME chairperson Dr Maneesh Chandran also addressed the gathering. Satheesan and Dr Subba Rao Pavuluri jointly planted saplings on the campus. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the expo held as part of the celebrations.
