**Kozhikode: **The difficult phase for coconut farmers may finally be showing signs of easing, with coconut shells emerging as a valuable commodity in the international market. On World Coconut Day, the coconut industry has received a significant boost, with processed coconut shells contributing substantially to India’s export earnings.

Coconut shells, which were once treated largely as waste or a low-value by-product, are now fetching considerable returns. In some cases, the value generated from coconut shells has surpassed the price received for coconuts themselves. During the financial year 2025-26, India earned ₹4,688 crore from activated charcoal produced by processing coconut shells. This marks an all-time record for Kerala’s coconut-related export sector.

India exported around 1.79 lakh tonnes of activated charcoal during the year. Activated charcoal made from coconut shells accounted for approximately 66 per cent of the country’s total coconut export value, highlighting the growing importance of this product in the global market.

In 2024-25, India exported around 1.76 lakh tonnes of activated charcoal, generating ₹2,799 crore in revenue. Although the export volume increased by only about 3,000 tonnes this year, a sharp rise in international prices resulted in a substantial increase in export earnings.

In 2025, activated charcoal imports by the United States increased by only around 10 per cent, while prices surged by approximately 38 per cent. According to a market review by the International Coconut Community, prices of activated charcoal from India and Indonesia had increased by around $900 to $1,000 per tonne by the middle of 2025. The price surge played a major role in boosting India’s export earnings.

Activated charcoal is widely used globally in water purification, air purification and various industrial filtration processes. India is currently the world’s leading exporter of coconut shell-based activated charcoal, giving the country a strong position in the international coconut-products market.Exports of ordinary coconut shell charcoal also generated around ₹102 crore during 2025-26. India additionally exported about 234 tonnes of coconut shells, valued at ₹2.91 crore.

Overall, India exported coconut products worth ₹7,038.34 crore in 2025-26, an increase of ₹2,689 crore compared with the previous year. The previous record stood at ₹4,349 crore in 2024-25.The long-term growth is equally notable. Over the past decade, the value of India’s coconut product exports has increased nearly fivefold. In 2015-16, coconut products worth only ₹1,385 crore were exported.

The figures indicate that the coconut industry is increasingly moving beyond traditional products, with value-added products such as activated charcoal creating new opportunities for farmers, processors and exporters. The growing demand for coconut shell-based products in international markets could provide an additional source of income for coconut-growing regions, particularly Kerala.
