When people think of breathtaking sunrises, sprawling ocean beaches or mist-covered mountain peaks usually come to mind. However, in a remote corner of Arunachal Pradesh, travelers wake up in the dead of night to welcome the dawn. Navigating through dark mountain trails, adventure seekers make their way toward the Dong Valley, renowned as one of the very first places in India to witness the rising sun.

Nestled near Walong in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, the Dong village and its surrounding valley lie close to the banks of the Lohit River. This rugged mountainous terrain has earned widespread fame because the first rays of the Indian sun touch its peaks before anywhere else in the country.

Catching the sunrise at Dong requires starting the trek at midnight. Moving through pitch-black forest trails and winding mountain paths culminates at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the valley. The quiet ambiance, dense wooded slopes, and starry skies heighten the adventure. Finally, as the eastern horizon blushes with saffron hues and the sun ascends, the breathtaking spectacle deeply captivates every traveler.

Beyond the iconic sunrise, Dong offers plenty of other attractions. Steeped in history and rich culture, the border region sits just about seven kilometers away from Walong, which presents magnificent hill vistas. Kibithu, one of India's easternmost inhabited regions, is also located nearby. The flowing Lohit River, pine-clad mountain ranges, expansive valleys, and frosty mornings combine to give this destination a unique charm.

Adding to its appeal, the Arunachal Pradesh government hosted its inaugural Sunrise Festival here from late December to early January. Alongside guided sunrise treks, the event featured cultural programs, local culinary delicacies, and handicraft exhibitions for visitors.

Reaching Dong can be physically demanding, but the challenge adds to the allure of the journey. Dibrugarh Airport in Assam serves as the nearest major airport, while New Tinsukia Junction is the closest major railway station. Travelers typically reach the valley by road passing through Tinsukia, Tezu, Hayuliang, and Walong.
