**Thiruvananthapuram: **A woman passenger who was allegedly removed from a train at midnight despite having a valid reservation ticket and was subsequently arrested for travelling without a ticket has been awarded ₹2 lakh in compensation. The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed the Railways to pay the compensation within one month.

The order was issued by Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas in connection with the complaint filed by K. Jayasmitha, a native of Erumapetty in Thrissur who resides in Thiruvananthapuram.

The commission also directed the Railways to conduct an inquiry into the actions of the officials responsible for the incident and recover the compensation amount from those found responsible. Justice Alexander Thomas observed that the decision to remove a woman travelling alone from the train at midnight was improper, particularly in the circumstances of the case.

The incident that led to the complaint occurred on July 30, 2023. Jayasmitha had a reserved ticket to travel from Wadakkanchery to Thiruvananthapuram. She had been allotted berth number 41 in the S4 coach. However, when she reached her berth, she found that the same berth had reportedly been allotted to another passenger.

She then approached the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and explained the situation. According to the complaint, the TTE informed her that her ticket had been cancelled online. Jayasmitha reportedly questioned how a ticket that she had purchased directly from Thiruvananthapuram railway station could have been cancelled online without her knowledge or consent. However, she did not receive a satisfactory explanation.

The TTE subsequently told her that another berth could be provided if she paid a ₹500 penalty. Jayasmitha, however, did not have ₹500 in cash at the time. She also sought information about the person who had allegedly cancelled her ticket without her knowledge, but the TTE did not provide the details.

As it was already midnight, Jayasmitha reportedly requested that she not be forced to leave the train. Her request was allegedly ignored. When the train reached Aluva, she was handed over to Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. She was subsequently arrested and released on bail on allegations of travelling without a valid ticket.

The Railways later withdrew the case after it was reportedly found that the case had been registered incorrectly. In its order, the Human Rights Commission noted that the action taken against the woman, who was travelling alone at night, was improper and directed the Railways to compensate her for the ordeal.
