Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The launch was carried out from the centre’s second launch pad at around 2:55 am on Friday, marking another significant milestone in India’s space and Earth observation programme.

The EOS-05 satellite, also referred to as GISAT-1A, is designed to significantly enhance India’s capabilities in Earth observation and the monitoring of large geographical areas. Unlike conventional remote-sensing satellites that operate in lower orbits, the satellite is intended to function from a geosynchronous orbit approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth.

Its orbital position will allow the satellite to continuously observe large areas from a relatively fixed position above the Earth. This capability is expected to be particularly valuable for monitoring rapidly developing situations and providing timely information for disaster management and other critical applications.

The satellite’s Earth observation capabilities could play an important role during natural disasters such as cyclones, floods and forest fires. Instead of relying only on images captured at intervals, continuous observation of a particular region can help scientists and disaster-management agencies assess changing conditions more quickly and accurately.

The data generated by the satellite is also expected to have applications beyond disaster management. Information from the mission could support border surveillance, environmental monitoring and agricultural activities by providing detailed observations of the Earth’s surface.

The successful GSLV mission further demonstrates ISRO’s growing capabilities in deploying advanced Earth observation satellites and strengthening India’s space-based monitoring infrastructure. The mission is expected to contribute to a wide range of applications requiring timely and reliable information about conditions on the ground.
