Kozhikode: A two-day strategic leadership workshop titled ‘Reimagining Kerala’, organised by the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode for the state Cabinet, has begun in Kozhikode. The workshop, being held on September 4 and 5, aims to assess Kerala’s long-term development prospects and the challenges the state is likely to face in the coming years while exploring new ideas and policy approaches.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Cabinet members, the Chief Secretary, the Chief Minister’s Secretary, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and the State Protocol Officer are participating in the workshop. Faculty members from IIMK and international experts are leading various sessions. The programme is being conducted at Class-1 of the IIMK Management Development Centre.

The first day of the workshop began at 9 am with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by V.D. Satheesan. The opening session at 9.30 am focused on ‘Transformational Leadership in the Age of AI: Engaging People with Purpose and Impact’. IIMK Director Prof. Debashis Chatterjee is leading the session.

Along with reviewing Kerala’s existing development achievements, the workshop places emphasis on collective thinking and strategic discussions on major changes that could shape the state’s future.

Several key areas will be discussed during different sessions, including leadership in the age of artificial intelligence, approaches to turning government policies into sustainable improvements in people’s lives, climate resilience, community-based disaster management, public health, an ageing population, the silver economy, economic and financial affairs, employment, entrepreneurship, skill development, higher education and Kerala’s global branding.

On the first day, participants will examine the potential to develop Kerala as a major health and wellness destination, along with possibilities related to the proposed Silver Economy Mission. The workshop will also discuss effective strategies to address climate change and strengthen community-based disaster management. Dr Devi Shetty, founder of Narayana Health, will participate in a session focusing on the future of public healthcare.

International experts, including Prof. Rajib Shaw of Keio University in Japan and Dr Sanjayan Banerjee, Associate Professor at King’s College London, are also participating in various sessions. Discussions will explore how governance and public policies can be transformed into sustainable social outcomes and how Kerala can adapt successful global models from different countries.

The central objective of the workshop is to provide the state’s leadership with an opportunity to step away from the demands of day-to-day administration and focus collectively on major long-term changes that could determine Kerala’s future.

The workshop will also serve as a platform to exchange ideas on long-term solutions to challenges such as population ageing, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, climate change, migration, changes in remittance patterns and increasing fiscal pressures.

Rather than following a conventional classroom-based training model, the programme places greater emphasis on dialogue and interaction between experts and policymakers. The objective is to develop a clearer understanding of long-term trends affecting Kerala and promote an evidence-based approach to converting policy decisions into sustainable outcomes.

This is the second time that IIM Kozhikode is organising a dedicated leadership programme for the Kerala Cabinet. In 2011, IIMK had conducted a one-day leadership and management programme for the Cabinet led by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The ‘Reimagining Kerala’ strategic leadership workshop is expected to become an important platform for developing new ideas and policy interventions aimed at making Kerala’s development journey more inclusive, sustainable, knowledge-driven and technology-oriented. It is also expected to strengthen cooperation between the academic community and the government in shaping the state’s long-term development strategy.
