Could humans one day build homes beyond Earth? This is one of the major questions being explored by scientists as space agencies around the world prepare for longer and more ambitious missions. The possibility of humans living for extended periods on the Moon, Mars or elsewhere in the solar system could become a reality in the future. But creating a safe and sustainable habitat in an environment vastly different from Earth presents enormous challenges.

How can a home be designed to withstand intense radiation from the Sun, extreme temperatures and limited access to essential resources such as energy, air and water?Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s ‘Bhim’ concept seeks to explore some of these questions. Bhim refers to the Bharatiya Habitable Expandable Extraterrestrial Habitat, a concept focused on developing potential habitats that could allow humans to live and work beyond Earth.

Travelling to space in a rocket and surviving there for an extended period are two very different challenges. A spacecraft can transport astronauts to their destination, but if humans are expected to remain there for days, months or even years, they will require a secure and reliable living environment.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s research has focused on the question of how humans could live if they eventually establish a presence on another world. The idea emerged from academic research undertaken as part of India’s astronaut training programme. The research was developed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

After completing training in Russia, Shubhanshu Shukla and other Indian astronauts continued their training in India. Their preparation included studies related to launch vehicles and orbital modules, along with demanding physical conditioning and specialised training for spaceflight.

However, the programme was not limited to physical and technical preparation. The astronauts were also encouraged to undertake academic research into subjects connected with the future of space exploration. The objective was to deepen their understanding of upcoming space missions and encourage ideas that could potentially contribute to India’s future space programmes.

Shubhanshu Shukla chose extraterrestrial habitats, or living spaces designed for humans beyond Earth, as the focus of his study. His work examined various technologies and infrastructure requirements that could be necessary for establishing such habitats.

On Earth, humans naturally have access to breathable air, water, suitable temperatures and protection from the surrounding environment. These conditions cannot simply be assumed to exist on another planet or celestial body. Any future settlement beyond Earth would therefore need systems capable of providing these basic requirements while protecting inhabitants from extreme environmental conditions.

The research explores what kind of preparations and technologies could be required to overcome these challenges.

As humans prepare for increasingly longer space missions, Shubhanshu Shukla has emphasised the importance of beginning preparations for future extraterrestrial living today. In a post on X, he highlighted the need to start preparing now if humanity wants to establish a presence beyond Earth in the coming decades.

Today, much of the discussion surrounding space exploration focuses on travelling from Earth into space. In the future, however, the central question could shift from how humans reach space to how long they can safely live there.

The Bhim concept reflects that changing vision of space exploration—one in which humans may eventually move beyond short-duration missions and begin developing sustainable habitats in environments far beyond Earth.
