Thrissur: Eight people were killed in a tragic road accident on National Highway 66 at Panambikunnu in Kaipamangalam, Thrissur. The accident occurred around midnight when a car carrying eight people crashed into a lorry that had been parked on the highway. Seven people died at the accident spot, while another person succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital.

The victims are suspected to be students from Tamil Nadu. The vehicle involved in the accident was a seven-seater car registered in Madurai. According to the initial information, all eight occupants of the car are believed to have died in the collision.

The car was travelling from the Guruvayur side towards Kodungallur when it crashed into the stationary lorry. The lorry was reportedly parked in the same direction of traffic at a section of the highway where road construction work was in progress. The circumstances surrounding the parking of the lorry are also expected to be examined as part of the investigation.

A student identity card from PSNA Engineering College in Dindigul was reportedly recovered from the accident site. This has led to the suspicion that the deceased were students from Tamil Nadu. Authorities are expected to confirm the identities of the victims and other details following the necessary procedures.

Local residents, police personnel and fire and rescue services took part in the rescue operation. The impact of the collision left the car badly damaged, making it difficult to remove those trapped inside.
