Kottayam: An engineering student from a private engineering college in Ettumanoor has been arrested by the Ettumanoor Police for allegedly morphing photographs of female classmates into obscene images and storing them on his mobile phone. The accused, a fourth-year B.Tech student from Changanassery, was released on station bail after the arrest was formally recorded.

According to the information provided, the student allegedly took photographs of his classmates and combined them with obscene images before storing them on his phone. The matter came to light when a female classmate obtained possession of the accused's phone during project work and found photographs, including her own, stored on the device.

The students subsequently informed the police. A case was registered based on complaints from seven female students on the campus. Police reportedly found several photographs of female students stored on the accused's phone after being combined with nude images.

The original photographs of the students were reportedly saved in a folder that appeared when the laptop and mobile phone were initially opened. The same photographs were allegedly combined with obscene images and stored separately in a secret folder. The case was registered over the alleged morphing and storage of classmates' photographs.

According to the preliminary findings of the police, the accused had not sent the images to anyone else and had allegedly kept them on his devices. The mobile phone and laptop have been taken into police custody.

Kakkanad: Meanwhile, there has been a development in a separate case involving allegations that photographs of female teachers and students of Bharata Mata College in Thrikkakara were copied, morphed and circulated. The investigating team has reportedly found that photographs of teachers were morphed and circulated by the arrested college student. Police have stated that they have not found evidence that photographs of female students were morphed.

The accused in that case is S. Srihari, a second-year BBA (Logistics) student from Kilimanoor in Thiruvananthapuram. Police registered the case on Wednesday based on a complaint filed by the college authorities.

The preliminary assessment of the investigating officers is that there is no evidence that the accused was operating as part of a group for financial gain. Investigators reportedly believe that the alleged offence was linked to the accused's mental abnormality.

Investigators reportedly found that the accused had taken photographs and video clips of female students in their ordinary clothing using his mobile phone. The images were allegedly zoomed and edited before being shared in Telegram groups. However, according to the investigation team, the photographs of the students were not morphed.

At the same time, investigators reportedly found that photographs of female teachers at the college had been morphed and circulated in closed groups. Police also found that photographs of some other women had allegedly been misused in a similar manner.

Following the case becoming public, the Telegram groups allegedly used for the activity were found to have been completely deleted. Police reportedly suspect that the accused used Telegram's anonymity features, which can make identifying individuals difficult. The investigation team has pointed out that there are practical difficulties in recovering information from Telegram and obtaining details connected with the investigation.

The accused's mobile phone and laptop have been taken into police custody. The devices will be sent to a forensic laboratory for detailed scientific examination. Police have also conducted a search of the room where the accused was staying.

The investigating team has approached the court seeking custody of the accused on Monday for further questioning. According to the investigation team, detailed questioning is required to obtain more information from the digital devices and identify the source of the deleted groups and their content. The investigation is being conducted by a team led by Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner C.K. Bijoy Chandran.
