**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: **The CPM’s draft document prepared for the extended state committee calls for the party to strengthen and properly present its secular political outlook among the people while correcting its shortcomings. Although the current controversies are not discussed in detail, the document is understood to have been prepared on the basis of the election review report earlier prepared by the state committee, with a focus on the party’s future activities.

The draft reportedly assesses that the growing influence of caste- and religion-based identity politics is weakening the party’s vote bank and says greater vigilance is needed to create public awareness against communal alliances.

According to the draft, there has been self-criticism that the party and class-mass organisations in Kerala became weaker during the period of successive governments, similar to what happened in Bengal. There was also widespread campaigning that the Left was undergoing a process of right-wing transformation.

The document reportedly says that although the CPM has a clear understanding of parliamentary and organisational activities, it failed to conduct agitation and campaign activities based on that approach.

The party had expected to bring back to power a government that had created significant progress in various sectors. However, it faced an unexpected setback. The draft calls for moving forward by correcting shortcomings and overcoming the challenges of the times. It also stresses that strengthening the Left front in Kerala is essential for popular struggles in the country.

The document recalls that following the 1977 election after the Emergency, the CPM could win only 17 seats and lost all 20 parliamentary constituencies. Despite that setback, the party later came to power several times. The draft says the weaknesses must be properly understood and the organisation taken forward, with unity being important to overcome the setback.

According to the draft, the UDF, along with right-wing media, sought to criticise all government schemes and unite anti-Left forces. The document reportedly identifies these efforts to bring together forces against the party as a major reason for the Left front’s defeat
