Kozhikode: Around 50 cultural activists have extended solidarity to research scholar Anagha Shashi, who has launched an indefinite hunger strike as part of her protest against alleged caste discrimination at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University. The activists have urged the Kerala government to intervene immediately and address her demands.

Anagha began the indefinite hunger strike on Saturday as the second phase of her protest, after staging a three-week satyagraha without receiving any action from the government, according to the statement issued by the cultural activists. In a letter signed by around 50 cultural figures, they said the government should intervene in the matter without delay.

The signatories stated that the alleged caste-based harassment faced by the research scholar and the circumstances that led her to undertake such a protest could not be accepted. They called for the implementation of the Rohith Vemula Act in higher educational institutions across Kerala and demanded that Anagha be provided an opportunity to complete her research independently and with dignity.

The letter also called for action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against teachers Arun Babu and Jaini Varghese, as well as the student who was allegedly her roommate, in connection with the allegations raised by Anagha. The activists also demanded that all Dalit, Adivasi and religious minority students be provided an environment in which they can complete their education with dignity. The cultural activists urged the government to immediately take steps to accept Anagha’s demands and bring her protest to an end.
