New Delhi: The Central Government has revised the booking interval for domestic LPG cylinders, allowing all domestic LPG consumers across the country, irrespective of whether they live in rural or urban areas, to book a cylinder once every 25 days. The decision changes the earlier 45-day booking interval introduced after LPG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz were disrupted following the US-Iran conflict.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi announced the change through a Facebook post. The Petroleum Ministry has also issued urgent directions to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in this regard.

In February 2026, the US-Iran conflict and the subsequent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had severely affected the global oil and energy supply chain. According to the government’s position, the measures were introduced to avoid a situation in which disruptions to energy imports into India could lead to a severe LPG shortage in the country.

As part of those measures, the booking interval was revised under the Essential Commodities Act to 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas. The government had also restricted the use of special gases such as C3 and C4 exclusively for LPG production.

The supply disruptions also contributed to an increase in cooking gas prices. The price of a domestic cylinder was increased by Rs 60 in March and by another Rs 29 in June. As a result, the price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi rose to Rs 942.

The latest relaxation comes as the LPG supply situation in the country has gradually improved and the cylinder booking backlog has declined significantly. Earlier in June, the government had also withdrawn restrictions on commercial LPG supplies.

The OMCs were directed to restore non-domestic packed LPG supplies to pre-crisis normal levels. To ensure the smooth functioning of industrial sectors, supplies were also allowed up to 50 per cent of pre-crisis consumption levels. The latest change in the domestic LPG booking interval is expected to provide significant relief to the country’s crores of domestic consumers, particularly those in rural areas.
