**Thiruvananthapuram:** The Kerala government has not yet forwarded to the Public Service Commission its recommendation to extend the validity of teachers’ rank lists, despite a Cabinet decision to do so. The previous Cabinet meeting had decided to extend the validity of 18 teachers’ rank lists covering levels from pre-primary to higher secondary by six months.

The recommendation was intended for rank lists whose validity was due to expire in September, October and November. However, the government is now understood to be of the view that extending only selected rank lists could lead to legal issues in the future.

Sources indicate that the government has decided to delay forwarding the recommendation in view of the possibility that the PSC could reject it, citing legal concerns. Candidates who are waiting for new rank lists had earlier come forward opposing the extension of the existing lists.

The candidates had also met Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan recently and submitted a representation. They had waited by the roadside for the Chief Minister as he was returning after completing a training workshop at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode.

The candidates raised their concerns over the proposed extension of the teachers’ rank lists and submitted their representation to the Chief Minister. V.D. Satheesan assured them that the matter would be examined as required.

The government’s decision to hold back the recommendation comes against the backdrop of the concerns over extending only selected teachers’ rank lists. The issue involves 18 rank lists covering various teaching levels from pre-primary to higher secondary, with the proposed six-month extension applying to lists whose validity expires during September, October and November. At present, the government is understood to be considering the potential legal implications before forwarding the Cabinet recommendation to the PSC.
