Kozhikode: An article published in Suprabhaatham last Sunday about Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan was not an editorial of the newspaper but a column titled ‘Vyakti Vicharam’, Suprabhaatham Managing Editor T.P. Cheruppa has clarified. In a video message, Cheruppa said that Suprabhaatham does not publish an editorial once a week and that the particular space on that day is used for the ‘Vyakti Vicharam’ column.

Cheruppa said the ‘Vyakti Vicharam’ column published on the editorial page of Suprabhaatham last Sunday had created considerable misunderstanding. Social media platforms and television channels had picked it up, leading to its circulation as though Suprabhaatham had published an editorial against Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan.

According to Cheruppa, the article was not the newspaper’s editorial. He explained that ‘Vyakti Vicharam’ is a column that deals with individuals and is written depending on the person and the circumstances or elections concerned. He said the column published on a particular day does not represent the opinion or policy of Suprabhaatham.

He also clarified the context of the headline, ‘Maryaadayaayi Samsaarikkanam’. The words were placed within quotation marks, he said, and therefore did not constitute a headline representing Suprabhaatham’s own position. According to Cheruppa, the words had been used by the Chief Minister himself while speaking to another person in a different context, and the headline was used because it was connected to the subject discussed in the column.

Cheruppa further said that the quoted wording was not Suprabhaatham’s own words. He added that the ‘Vyakti Vicharam’ column had often become the subject of controversy because it appears in the space where the editorial is normally placed. As a result, ordinary readers and even television channels sometimes misunderstand it as an editorial and circulate it in that manner.

He said the editorial side of the newspaper has now decided to address this confusion by changing the layout. As part of several changes planned in the newspaper in the coming days, the layout of the column will be altered because its placement in the editorial section could lead to it being mistaken for an editorial.Cheruppa appealed to readers not to misunderstand last Sunday’s ‘Vyakti Vicharam’ as the editorial of Suprabhaatham.
