**New Delhi: **Police cases were registered after pressure mounted over a purification ritual conducted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, targeting Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The Uttarakhand Police and Delhi Police registered two cases after 20 Congress SC/ST MPs staged a sit-in at the Parliament Police Station for two hours. The Congress has also decided to hold a major protest rally in Delhi.

The 20 Congress SC/ST MPs have not been granted permission to meet President Droupadi Murmu to submit their complaint regarding the incident.Following this, Congress MPs reached the Parliament Street Police Station under the leadership of Lok Sabha Congress Chief Whip Kodikunnil Suresh, MP Mallu Ravi, and K. Raju, who is also the AICC secretary and SC-ST national coordinator. They demanded that a case be registered at the Parliament Police Station by using the provision that allows a Zero FIR to be registered at any police station for an offence committed anywhere.

The Congress Dalit and Adivasi MPs demanded that a case be registered under provisions of the law aimed at preventing atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. According to the Congress, RSS-BJP workers conducted the purification ritual at the Haldwani Ramlila Maidan on August 8, following a Congress rally attended by Mallikarjun Kharge.

The issue had earlier been raised by Kharge in the Rajya Sabha. Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan and Leader of the House and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda had assured that action would be taken.

However, 20 days passed without any action, following which Rahul Gandhi called a special press conference. The developments subsequently led the Congress SC/ST MPs to approach the Parliament Street Police Station, seeking registration of a case over the Haldwani incident.

The allegations regarding the purification ritual and the actions of those involved are based on the position and complaint of the Congress MPs and the subsequent police proceedings.
