Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is facing power cuts lasting more than an hour, with electricity interruptions reported at various times on Monday night amid reduced availability of power from outside the state and increased consumption. The power cuts are taking place without a fixed time or duration, causing difficulties for people, particularly during the night. With rainfall decreasing, temperatures have remained high even at night, contributing to increased electricity consumption across the state.

Power interruptions may occur at any time between 6.30 pm and 12.30 am. According to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), it is not possible to specify an exact time for the cuts, and interruptions become necessary when the availability of electricity from outside Kerala declines.

During the summer, Kerala had entered into power exchange arrangements under which electricity purchased from other states would be returned when rainfall improved. The validity of these arrangements will end on the 15th. Following this, KSEB will be able to use 400 MW of electricity domestically.

Although the water level in the dams is currently at 64 per cent, total domestic power generation was increased to more than 26 million units on the previous day. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), intended to store electricity for peak-hour use, will require at least three months to begin operating on a trial basis.

According to the available power supply assessment, Kerala received 3.16 million units less electricity on the previous day as generation from coal-fired power plants declined. The shortage during peak hours was more than 580 MW.

The current power crisis is expected to continue for the time being. There are also difficulties in procuring additional electricity. The authorities have expressed regret over the difficulties being faced by the public.

The coal shortage is expected to be resolved by the 15th of this month, according to the information provided. Until then, the state is likely to continue facing challenges in meeting electricity demand, particularly during peak hours.
