Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government will take steps to extend the existing midday meal scheme in state schools up to Plus Two and include a breakfast programme, General Education Minister N. Shamsudeen said. He was speaking while inaugurating an orientation workshop for District Project Coordinators and Programme Officers organised by Samagra Shiksha Kerala at Vizhinjam Spark Pastoral Centre.

At present, the midday meal programme is provided to students only up to Class 8. According to the minister, expanding the scheme to the higher secondary level would help ensure nutrition for all schoolchildren.

The minister also said that the government is obligated to implement the Supreme Court verdict concerning K-TET. To bring clarity to the confusion among teachers regarding the matter, the government will file a curative petition before the Supreme Court.

Addressing appointments related to persons with disabilities, the minister said around 1,700 appointments had been identified and approved as part of the 100-day action programme.

The government will also consider the district as a single unit to ensure compliance with the court's direction to guarantee four per cent reservation for persons with disabilities in appointments.

The announcements were made in the context of measures concerning school nutrition, teacher eligibility requirements and appointments under disability reservation provisions. The minister outlined the government's proposed steps while addressing the participants at the district-level orientation workshop organised by Samagra Shiksha Kerala.

The extension of the midday meal programme to Plus Two, along with the proposed inclusion of breakfast, is aimed at covering students beyond the existing Class 8 limit. The government has also indicated that action will be taken on the K-TET issue through a curative petition before the Supreme Court, while the identified appointments related to persons with disabilities have been approved under the 100-day action programme.
