Southern Railway, headquartered in Chennai, has invited applications for 4,038 apprentice vacancies, including 777 vacancies in Kerala. Candidates with Class 10, Plus Two or ITI qualifications can apply for the apprentice training positions. The training will be conducted across divisions, workshops and units, including Carriage Works at Perambur, Central Workshop at Golden Rock and the Signal and Telecommunication Workshop at Podanur in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala, vacancies are available in the Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram divisions.

Only candidates residing in Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar, Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada district), and Andhra Pradesh (Nellore and Chittoor districts), which come under the jurisdiction of Southern Railway, can apply.

The vacancies are available in several trades, including Fitter, Welder, Painter, Welder (G&E), MLT (Radiology/Pathology/Cardiology), MMV, MMTM, COPA/PASAA, Electrician, Mechanic R&A/C, Advanced Welder, Electronic Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Carpenter, Machinist, Structural Welder, Gas Cutter, Painter (G), Draughtsman (Civil), COPA, Wireman, SSA, Electrical Mechanic, Turner, Instrument Mechanic and Plumber.

For the Fresher category, the training period is two years for Fitter and Welder trades and one year and three months for the Welder and Medical Laboratory Technician trades. The training period for ITI trades is one year.

Stipend

Candidates in the Fresher category with a Class 10 qualification will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 8,200. Those with Plus Two or ITI qualifications will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 9,600.

For the Fresher category, candidates applying for the Fitter, Painter and Welder trades must have passed Class 10 under the Plus Two system with 50% marks or an equivalent qualification.For the Medical Laboratory Technician trade, candidates must have passed Plus Two with 50% marks, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects.For ITI trades, candidates must have passed Class 10 under the Plus Two system with 50% marks and possess an ITI qualification in the relevant trade under NCVT or SCVT.

Age Limit

Candidates must have completed at least 15 years of age as on the last date for receiving applications. Candidates in the Fresher category must not have completed 22 years, while those in the Ex-ITI/MLT category must not have completed 24 years.The upper age limit is relaxed by 10 years for persons with disabilities, five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates.

Women candidates, SC/ST candidates and persons with disabilities are exempt from paying the application fee. Other candidates must pay an online application fee of Rs 100.Selection will be based on a shortlist prepared according to the marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Applicants must produce a medical certificate in the prescribed format at the time of document verification. Applications must be submitted online, and the last date is the 27th of this month.
