Thiruvananthapuram: Former Power Minister K Krishnankutty has said that the current power crisis in Kerala is the result of lapses by the Electricity Department and a lack of coordination between the Kerala State Electricity Board , the Regulatory Commission and the office of the Electricity Department. He said there was no need for power cuts if the planned 1,500 MW battery storage system had been implemented.

Krishnankutty said weather warnings had indicated in advance that this would be an El Nino year, but adequate preparations were not made. He pointed out that a similar situation had occurred in 2023. At that time, the LDF government held high-level meetings every week to assess the situation. According to Krishnankutty, the crisis did not escalate to the same extent because timely interventions were made after anticipating the circumstances.

He said that during that period, he personally contacted the departments and concerned officials and reviewed the situation. A decision had also been taken to establish a 1,500 MW battery storage system in Kerala. The first phase of the project was supposed to be completed in September. However, Krishnankutty said there had been no progress on the project.

According to his position, implementing the battery storage system would eliminate the need for power cuts. He alleged that no steps had yet been initiated on the battery storage project.

Krishnankutty also addressed the long-term power purchase agreement from the tenure of Aryadan Mohammed. He said there was false propaganda that the LDF government had cancelled the agreement. According to him, it was the Regulatory Commission that cancelled the agreement in the Supreme Court, and the related legal proceedings are currently underway.

Towards the end of the LDF government's previous term, limited power restrictions had to be imposed during the summer, he said. Krishnankutty noted that those who had created a major uproar over the restrictions at that time were now implementing power cuts without any prior warning.

He also alleged that even the electricity minister's phone number displayed on official websites has not yet been changed. He said people continue to call the number to register complaints, including during night hours.
