Gorakhpur: Police have registered a case against a women’s hostel warden in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur after a mobile phone was allegedly hidden inside a bathroom and used to record private visuals of female students. The Cantonment police registered an FIR under serious sections against Arati Singh, the warden of a private girls’ hostel in Mohaddipur.

The mobile phone was found switched on and positioned towards the toilet after being concealed inside the tin roofing of the bathroom. According to the students, a girl who entered the bathroom on Tuesday night first noticed the hidden phone. She then recorded visuals of the phone and informed the other hostel residents.

The students alleged that the camera had remained operational for around three hours and that footage of more than five girls had been recorded. They also complained that some of the visuals had been circulated through social media. Following the discovery, the students gathered at the hostel and staged a strong protest.

During questioning, the warden reportedly gave an explanation that she had placed the phone to find out whether students were carelessly disposing of sanitary pads. She maintained that there was no malicious intention behind placing the device, according to the account provided during the inquiry.

However, the students submitted a written complaint to the police, alleging that the incident amounted to a serious violation of their privacy and sexual harassment. A total of 26 girls, including college students and those preparing for competitive examinations, are staying at the hostel.

Police who reached the location seized the mobile phone. City SP Nimish Patil said the footage and data stored on the phone had been sent for forensic examination and that further action would follow soon.

The allegations regarding the recordings, their circulation and the warden’s actions remain part of the police investigation. The incident has triggered widespread protests in Uttar Pradesh.
