NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India early Friday ahead of the BRICS Summit 2026. The Russian president’s official aircraft landed at Delhi airport. During his visit, Putin is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participate in a series of bilateral meetings.

The visit marks Putin’s first overseas participation in a BRICS Summit since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The two leaders are expected to discuss the full range of India-Russia relations, with trade, energy and defence cooperation likely to figure prominently.

Putin’s visit comes just days after Prime Minister Modi and the Russian president met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek on August 31. During that meeting, the two leaders reviewed cooperation in several areas, including political ties, trade, defence, energy, space and mobility.

The two leaders also discussed the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region during their meeting in Bishkek.Putin’s presence in Delhi comes at a time when India and Russia are seeking to deepen their economic engagement despite mounting geopolitical pressure over Moscow’s war in Ukraine and Western restrictions on Russian trade.

The Russian president’s visit is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for the two sides to further discuss areas of bilateral cooperation amid the wider geopolitical situation.Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said that the two countries were also exploring cooperation in rare earths. According to Peskov, the possible sale of Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter jets to India is also among the areas being explored.

The upcoming discussions between Modi and Putin are expected to cover the broader India-Russia partnership, while trade, energy and defence cooperation are likely to remain prominent areas of engagement during the Russian president’s visit.

Putin’s arrival in Delhi ahead of the BRICS Summit comes as both countries continue efforts to strengthen their economic engagement and explore additional areas of cooperation, according to the information provided.
