THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bank employees across India will go on a nationwide strike today over various demands, including making the banking workweek five days. ATM services, UPI transactions and online banking services will not be affected by the strike. With the second Saturday and Sunday falling on the following two days, banks will remain closed for three consecutive days. On Monday, some banks across the country will also remain closed due to Vinayaka Chaturthi.

The strike is being led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), a joint platform of seven bank employees’ organisations in the country. The organisations include BEFI, AIBEA, AIBOC and NCBE.The main demand behind the strike is to make the working days of banks five days a week. Bank employees’ organisations have been raising the demand as part of their broader concerns over working arrangements in the banking sector.

Although bank branches will remain closed due to the strike, ATM services, UPI payments and online transactions will continue to function. Customers will therefore be able to use these digital and automated banking facilities during the strike. The UFBU has also announced another phase of strikes on the 28th, 29th and 30th. The joint platform has further announced that an indefinite strike will begin from October 26.

The nationwide strike today, followed by the second Saturday and Sunday, will result in bank branches remaining closed for three consecutive days. In addition, some banks will have a holiday on Monday on account of Vinayaka Chaturthi.

The UFBU is leading the strike with the participation of seven bank employees’ organisations, including BEFI, AIBEA, AIBOC and NCBE. The organisations are seeking, among other demands, a five-day working week for banks.

With further strike dates already announced for the 28th, 29th and 30th, and an indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 26, the bank employees’ organisations have outlined a continuing programme of industrial action.

Customers relying on branch-based banking services may therefore face closures on the strike day and during the subsequent holidays, while ATM, UPI and online banking services are not expected to be disrupted by the strike.
