A 26-year-old man who sought infertility treatment in Delhi was found to have a small, underdeveloped uterus and structures resembling fallopian tubes inside his abdomen. The rare case was reported at R.G. Hospitals in Delhi, where further investigations confirmed Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome , a congenital condition.

The young man had sought medical treatment after remaining childless for a long period following marriage. He had previously been diagnosed with azoospermia, a condition in which sperm cells are absent from the semen. Both of his testicles were also undescended. To determine the actual reason for these conditions, doctors conducted further scans and investigations.

An MRI scan and genetic testing subsequently revealed the presence of a small, underdeveloped uterus inside the abdomen, along with structures resembling fallopian tubes. As the testicles had remained inside the abdomen for a long period, they had suffered damage. The uterus and female reproductive structures were also found to be incompletely developed.

The doctors performed a complex laparoscopic surgery to remove these structures. Examination of the removed tissues reportedly revealed abnormal cell growth in one of the testicles that had the potential to develop into cancer. According to the doctors, the timely surgery helped protect the young man from cancer.

During the development of a male fetus, the Müllerian ducts, which would normally develop into female reproductive organs, are expected to disappear naturally. In rare cases, however, these ducts remain instead of disappearing. As a result, a person who develops as male can have a uterus and tube-like structures inside the body.

According to the information provided, PMDS has been identified in fewer than 300 people worldwide so far. The condition is usually detected during childhood. Finding it in adulthood during an infertility evaluation is considered extremely rare.
