New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, with defense, energy security and expanding bilateral trade among the key issues discussed. The two leaders are targeting an increase in bilateral trade between India and Russia to $100 billion by 2030.

The meeting comes as Russia’s economic and energy ties with India remain significant amid the continuing Ukraine war and disruptions affecting global energy supplies. It was also the first time Putin has personally attended a BRICS summit held outside Russia since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

During the discussions, the two countries explored cooperation across several sectors, including industrial collaboration, railways, tunneling, steel production, civil nuclear technology, fertilizer supplies and critical minerals. The two sides also discussed the services of skilled workers from India.

Energy cooperation with Russia continues to hold particular importance for India against the backdrop of an energy crisis caused by conflicts in West Asia and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions therefore included energy security as one of the major areas of bilateral engagement.

With the Ukraine war entering its fifth year, Modi urged Russia to move toward ending the conflict and achieving peace. He also made it clear that India is not neutral on the issue but is on the side of peace.

The meeting also featured a cultural gesture at its beginning. Modi presented Putin with a Russian translation of the Tirukkural, the renowned work of Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar.

Tirukkural is a celebrated classic of Tamil literature that addresses different dimensions of human life, including morality, personal conduct, human relationships, and life and death. The work is widely recognized for its philosophical and ethical reflections on various aspects of human existence.

By presenting its Russian translation at the beginning of the bilateral meeting, Modi sought to highlight the cultural connection between the two countries while sharing an important part of India’s rich literary and philosophical heritage with the Russian president.

The bilateral discussions thus covered both strategic and economic priorities, including trade expansion, energy security, industrial cooperation and skilled manpower, alongside an emphasis on cultural ties between India and Russia.
