# CPI Won’t Support Pinarayi Vijayan in ED Move Without Further Discussion

**Thiruvananthapuram:** The CPI has decided not to extend immediate support to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan following the Enforcement Directorate’s new move. The CPI state secretariat decided that the issue would be discussed after the government takes a decision in the case and that the party would clarify its position, if necessary, at that stage. The party indicated that if the CPI is convinced by the explanations given by the CPI, the matter could be considered further.

The decision came at a time when the CPI(M)’s central and state leaderships have strongly backed Pinarayi Vijayan. The CPI, however, chose to maintain silence rather than immediately issue a statement in his support. This has made it clear that there will not be common support from the LDF for Pinarayi Vijayan at this stage.

The state secretariat discussed what approach should be adopted in Kerala while the CPI continues to oppose what it considers political moves by the Enforcement Directorate at the national level. However, the meeting also expressed doubts regarding the transparency of transactions involving Pinarayi Vijayan’s daughter, T. Veena. The CPI has been maintaining the position that Veena should deal with her own case.

Although the party understood that the latest ED move was directly targeting Pinarayi Vijayan, the view that there was no situation to rush into declaring support for him prevailed at the meeting.

The earlier approach adopted during the Lavalin case was also discussed. When the CPI(M) decided to face the Lavalin case legally and politically, then CPI secretary C.K. Chandrappan had taken the position that the case should be dealt with legally. However, the CPI assessed that the same approach may not be practical in the present situation because the party considers the ED to be an agency being used by the BJP for political purposes.

Even then, the meeting decided that there should be no statement supporting Pinarayi Vijayan. There was also criticism that the CPI(M) had not made any attempt at any stage to convince the CPI on the issue.

The prevailing understanding in the meeting was that the CPI(M) should first fulfill its responsibility as the party concerned by explaining the matter to its alliance partner. Once that responsibility is carried out, the CPI can fulfill its responsibility as a coalition partner, according to the position that emerged from the state secretariat discussion.
