New Delhi: The 18th BRICS Summit will begin at 2 pm today at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with major world leaders arriving in the national capital to attend the meeting. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi at 12 noon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with the Chinese President in the evening. Modi is also scheduled to participate in bilateral discussions with the leaders of 15 countries, including Xi Jinping.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit as the country holding the BRICS chairmanship for 2026. BRICS comprises 11 countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Egypt and Ethiopia. The grouping also has partner countries, including Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The summit will conclude on Sunday evening.

The heads of state of Russia, Iran and South Africa, who arrived on Friday, also participated in the BRICS Business Forum. The presidents of Russia and Iran also held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

During his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi called for a safe route for the maritime movement of Indians in the Black Sea. Modi also reiterated that diplomatic dialogue should be pursued to bring an end to Russia’s war with Ukraine.

India’s role as the 2026 BRICS chair places New Delhi at the centre of discussions involving the member and partner countries.
