Kochi: Kerala will introduce a new energy policy aimed at making better use of the potential of the renewable energy sector, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said. He said solar power would be given priority under the new policy, which is expected to be introduced in October. The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating the CORE Renew Expo and Energy Conclave organised by the Confederation of Renewable Energy at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor.

Satheesan said the government had noticed unhealthy practices in the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) related to power restrictions. According to him, electricity restrictions are being imposed four or five times a day in some places. He described the approach behind such measures as an attempt to create confusion and take advantage of the situation.

The Chief Minister said action would be taken against unnecessary power restrictions. He also questioned why some sections within KSEB become uncomfortable when renewable energy is discussed. According to Satheesan, such sections are interested in purchasing electricity from outside at a cost of crores of rupees.

He said Kerala needs to shift towards renewable energy if electricity production is to match the state’s energy requirements. A new energy policy addressing this transition will be introduced in October, he said.

Satheesan also said rooftop solar projects were progressing well in the state. However, he stressed that the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which enables electricity to be stored in batteries, needs to be improved.

Hibi Eden MP, Finance Department Additional Chief Secretary K.R. Jyothilal, former KSEB CMD Biju Prabhakar, INKEL Managing Director Dr. E.K. Elangovan, CORE patron Naushad Sharafudeen, president Fayas Muhammed Salam, secretary Roy Christy and treasurer James Mathew were among those who attended the event. The expo and energy conclave will conclude on Sunday.
