**Sultan Bathery: **Seven sacks of tobacco products that had been seized in a case and kept in police custody on the direction of a court have gone missing from the Sultan Bathery police station premises. The sacks were stored in a locked room in a building within the station compound. A case has been registered following a complaint by the Station House Officer, and an investigation is underway.

On June 7, police had seized 12,000 packets of Hans and 1,800 packets of Cool Lip that were allegedly stored in seven sacks in a secret compartment behind a cupboard at a house where Pallikkandi native Ishaq was staying at Benachi Dottappankulam. Police had also seized another sack of tobacco products from a car outside the house.

The seized materials were produced before the Bathery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-I. The court subsequently handed them over to the police for safekeeping. The seized items had been kept in a room in a building within the police station compound from June 26.

According to the FIR, the key to the locked room was usually kept in the drawer of the Assistant Station Writer’s desk. The FIR states that the key was taken from there, the room was opened and the seized materials were allegedly stolen.

The missing items were discovered on Thursday at around 4 p.m., when the room was opened for cleaning under the supervision of the station writer. Following the discovery, the SHO and other police personnel searched the station, rooms and surrounding areas, but the missing sacks could not be found.

There is also suspicion that someone from within the police station may have assisted in the removal of the tobacco products. The suspicion is based on the fact that the items were kept in a locked room and that the key had to be obtained to open it. Questions have also been raised over how such a quantity of material could have been taken from a police station that has police personnel and security around the clock. However, these are currently suspicions, and the investigation is continuing.

Seized property in cases registered under tobacco prohibition laws is generally kept at the police station until it is destroyed in accordance with court directions. The station also stores seized property connected with several other cases.

The fact that the material, which had reportedly been kept there for nearly two and a half months, was found missing only now has raised concerns. Although CCTV cameras are installed in most parts of the police station, the area where the seized materials were stored reportedly does not come under CCTV coverage.

Ishaq, who is an accused in the tobacco-related case, remains absconding. Police have intensified efforts to trace and arrest him.
