**Thrissur:** Veteran CPI Thrissur district secretary, Baby John had also contested the 2011 Assembly election from Manalur.

Baby John worked as a teacher at Blangad PVM Lower Primary School. He was known as an effective public speaker and was one of the prominent faces of the CPI(M) in Thrissur. He began associating with left-wing movements in 1969 and became a party member in 1971.

He served as the branch secretary of Paluvai and later worked as the secretary of the Thaikkad and Chavakkad local committees. From 1984 to 1997, he served as the Chavakkad area secretary. He became a member of the district committee in 1986 and has been a member of the district secretariat since 1997. In July 2006, he took charge as the CPI(M) Thrissur district secretary.

Baby John was also involved in political activities during the Emergency. He spent two-and-a-half months in jail during the period. On Independence Day in 1975, he was severely beaten by police while attempting to hoist a black flag. He was arrested twice under the Defence of India Rules (DIR) during the Emergency.

When Chavakkad municipality was formed during 1980–85, Baby John served as a councillor and became its first Standing Committee chairman. He was elected as a councillor again in 1988.

Baby John is survived by his wife, Sheela, and children Manavan, Himavan and Angana. Himavan is associated with Chavakkad Service Cooperative Bank, while Angana is associated with Ayyanthole Cooperative Bank.
