**Thiruvananthapuram:** The Kerala government has increased the service lifespan of KSRTC buses to 20 years, allowing 2,050 buses that have completed 17 years to continue operating. The decision was taken through a government order to prevent the withdrawal of these buses, which are currently being used for ordinary services. The move is also expected to prevent the Priyadarshini scheme from being affected.

The service lifespan of government vehicles had recently been increased to 20 years. Following that decision, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had also sought an extension of the permitted lifespan of its buses.

The older KSRTC buses are being operated as ordinary-service buses. According to the report, withdrawing these vehicles would affect the Priyadarshini scheme. The Centre had fixed the lifespan of buses at 15 years. However, extending the lifespan of the buses beyond this period is against the central law.

The state has a history of being the first in the country to limit the lifespan of buses to 15 years, citing passenger safety. Private bus operators had even approached the Supreme Court against the decision, but the verdict was in favour of the government.

Meanwhile, the Centre subsequently fixed the lifespan at 15 years. The state later increased the permitted lifespan of private buses to 20 years and subsequently to 22 years, overriding the earlier limit.

The government is now preparing to increase the lifespan of private buses to 25 years. The latest decision to extend the lifespan of KSRTC buses to 20 years will allow the 2,050 buses that have crossed 17 years of service to remain in operation.
