**Edgbaston: **England batter Joe Root continued to rewrite Test cricket records, surpassing Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar for the most Test half-centuries during the final Test against Pakistan. Root completed his 69th Test fifty, moving ahead of Tendulkar, who had 68 half-centuries. The England batter is now also closing in on Tendulkar’s long-standing record for the most runs in Test cricket.

Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in Test cricket, having accumulated 15,921 runs from 329 innings. Root, who is second on the list, has scored 14,278 runs from 309 innings. He therefore needs 1,643 more runs to overtake Tendulkar and claim the record for the highest run tally in Test cricket.

If Root continues his current form, he could soon challenge the historic record. Ricky Ponting is third on the list with 13,378 runs, followed by Jacques Kallis with 13,289 and Rahul Dravid with 13,288.

Root has also set another Test record by becoming the player with the most runs in the fourth innings of Test matches. He has scored 2,059 runs in fourth-innings situations.

In the list of players with the most Test fifties, West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul is third with 66 half-centuries. Allan Border and Rahul Dravid have 63 fifties each, while Ricky Ponting has completed 50 runs on 62 occasions.

Root also became the first batter to score more than 1,000 Test runs at Edgbaston. After Lord’s, Manchester and The Oval, Edgbaston is the fourth venue where he has crossed the 1,000-run mark. Root has scored 2,203 Test runs at Lord’s, 1,128 at Manchester and 1,050 at The Oval, making him the latest member of the elite group of batters to score more than 1,000 Test runs at four different venues.
