**New Delhi: **Technology-related professionals are at the forefront of artificial intelligence tool usage in India, according to Anthropic’s latest Economic Index. Data released in June on the use of Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude showed that jobs in the computer and mathematics category recorded the highest share of AI usage in the country, at 26.17 percent. Education and library occupations accounted for 14.85 percent, followed by arts, design, entertainment and media at 11.82 percent. Sales recorded 7.84 percent, office and administrative support 7.46 percent, management 6.84 percent, and architecture and engineering 3.72 percent.

Among the world’s 15 largest Claude markets, India’s combined use in computer, mathematics and engineering fields stood at 29.9 percent, the highest rate globally. Brazil followed at 29.4 percent, while Pakistan recorded 28.9 percent, Mexico 28.7 percent, and the United States 24 percent.

According to data for May, India accounted for 7.12 percent of global Claude usage. This made the country the second-largest AI user in the world after the United States.

Claude usage in India is concentrated more heavily in software and computing fields than in traditional engineering sectors. Document management specialists accounted for 3.87 percent of usage, followed by data warehousing specialists at 2.56 percent, computer programmers at 2.49 percent, and web and digital interface designers at 2.38 percent. In comparison, usage among automotive, mechanical, electronics and civil engineers was much lower.

The data also showed that Claude’s use for mathematical theory and computer science in India is twice the global rate. Its use in AI application development is 1.8 times the global average, while usage for document modification is 1.6 times the global average.

> In the computer and mathematics fields, 65 percent of conversations fall under “augmentation,” where AI assists human workers, while 35 percent fall under “automation,” where AI performs tasks independently. The figures therefore indicate that AI in India is being used mainly as an aid to human work rather than primarily as a replacement for it.
