**London:** Princess Diana’s world-famous black ‘Revenge Dress’ is set to return to auction in December, with the iconic silk outfit expected to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000, equivalent to approximately ₹1.4 crore to ₹2.8 crore. According to a report by Vogue, the dress will be the main attraction at Sotheby’s special fashion evening auction in New York on December 9. Before the auction, the dress will be displayed publicly in London, Hong Kong and Geneva.

Diana wore the black off-shoulder dress at a Vanity Fair party held at the Serpentine Gallery in London in June 1994. The event took place on the same day that her then-husband, Prince Charles, gave a televised interview in which he openly discussed his extramarital relationship. Diana had initially planned to wear another outfit but changed her decision at the last moment.

The dress was designed by Christina Stambolian. Although Diana had owned it for three years, she had not worn it in public earlier, reportedly because she did not have the confidence to do so. Her appearance at the Serpentine Gallery, however, came to be seen as an example of how she used fashion to face a personal crisis with confidence. The dress later became globally known as the ‘Revenge Dress’.

Diana did not wear the dress publicly again after the Serpentine Gallery event. In 1997, she put the dress up for auction along with 78 of her other gowns to raise funds for charitable activities involving cancer and AIDS patients. Scottish industrialist Graham Mackenzie bought the dress at that auction.

The dress appeared again at a Sotheby’s auction in 2023, where it was sold for $604,800. The upcoming December auction will also have a charitable purpose. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the NHS Lothian charity of the Royal Hospital of Edinburgh.

The history of the ‘Revenge Dress’ is closely associated with the difficulties in Diana and Charles’s marriage, their separation announced in 1992, and their divorce in 1996.
