Panaji: Former Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal, who was found guilty in a sexual assault case, has surrendered before a court in Goa. The surrender follows the Supreme Court’s rejection of his plea seeking to overturn the Bombay High Court verdict. The Supreme Court had subsequently directed Tejpal to appear or surrender within two weeks, following which he presented himself before the court.

Tejpal appeared before the Mapusa court in Goa in connection with the case relating to the alleged sexual assault in November 2013. The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court had earlier sentenced him to 10 years in prison in the case.

The Goa government had approached the Supreme Court seeking an enhancement of the sentence to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, Tejpal had also filed a plea challenging the High Court verdict.

The Goa government argued before the Supreme Court that the accused, after being found guilty, should first surrender and that only thereafter could his plea be considered. The Supreme Court accepted the government’s argument and directed Tejpal to appear or surrender within two weeks. He subsequently surrendered before the court on his own.

Following the surrender, the Supreme Court will consider Tejpal’s plea challenging the High Court verdict on September 22.The incident at the centre of the case took place in November 2013. According to the complaint by a former colleague, Tejpal sexually assaulted her inside a hotel lift during Tehelka’s ThinkFest event in Goa. Tejpal was subsequently arrested and was granted bail in July 2014.

In May 2021, the Goa Sessions Court acquitted Tejpal in the case. The Goa government challenged that decision before the Bombay High Court. Last month, the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court overturned the Sessions Court’s acquittal, found Tejpal guilty and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The latest surrender comes after the Supreme Court’s direction following the rejection of Tejpal’s plea against the Bombay High Court judgment.
