India is set to implement a fully barrier-free toll collection system by March 2027, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced. The minister said the complete implementation of the electronic toll collection system through FASTag is expected to generate additional government revenue of up to Rs 25,000 crore annually. Gadkari had earlier this year announced plans for a seamless toll collection system.

FASTags have already increased revenue at toll booths by 10 percent. That has helped increase toll revenue by around Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 82,000 crore,” Gadkari said.

The barrier-free toll booths are currently being implemented only on a trial basis. Gadkari has claimed that the system could increase toll revenue by Rs 8,000 crore. According to the minister, the new system can also reduce the operating cost of running a toll booth from the earlier 12 percent to 3 percent.

By the end of December 2026, 70 percent of toll booths in India will reportedly be shifted to a system capable of collecting tolls without barriers. The minister has assured that the barrier-free toll system will be implemented across 100 percent of India by March next year.

According to Gadkari, eliminating the need for vehicles to wait at toll booths will provide benefits to vehicle owners, including savings in time and fuel.At the beginning of 2026, Gadkari had announced plans to overhaul the existing toll collection system. Instead of stopping vehicles to collect tolls, the proposed system is designed to collect tolls without interrupting the journey. The multi-lane free-flow barrier-free toll collection system was introduced for this purpose.

The system can be implemented without dismantling existing toll plazas. However, the barriers used to stop vehicles and the cabins occupied by toll booth staff may be removed. Under the trial system, a frame is installed across the road, with cameras and equipment to read FASTags.

The system uses number plate recognition cameras and high-speed FASTag readers installed at toll plazas to identify vehicles, scan FASTags and collect the applicable toll. Authorities estimate that the system can reduce waiting time at toll plazas and help prevent major traffic congestion.

The high-speed readers can scan the FASTag of vehicles travelling on highways even at speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. The toll amount is then deducted from the FASTag account. If the FASTag cannot be read, cameras can identify the vehicle’s registration number and retrieve its details from the vehicle database to collect the toll.

Even if a vehicle’s FASTag is lost, incorrectly affixed or does not have sufficient balance, cameras installed at the toll booth can identify the vehicle number. Travelling without paying the applicable toll would then be treated as a violation, and the toll amount along with the penalty would be collected under the National Highway rules, according to the information provided.
