**Kochi:** The accused in the case related to the murder of SFI activist Abhimanyu at Ernakulam Maharaja’s College have sought an in-camera trial, requesting that the entry of media personnel and the public into the courtroom be restricted during the proceedings. The accused, who are Campus Front and Popular Front activists, submitted the application stating that photographs of them being taken and circulated could influence witness statements and affect their future lives.

The accused have also requested that students not be allowed to gather in the court premises, pointing out that Maharaja’s College is located close to the court complex. The application submitted by the accused will be considered by the Ernakulam Principal District and Sessions Court on Tuesday.

Continuous witness examination in the case is scheduled to begin from October 15. The request for an in-camera trial comes ahead of the continuation of the proceedings.

Abhimanyu, a second-year degree student at Maharaja’s College, was killed on July 2, 2018. The case has 26 accused, and the trial is beginning after eight years. A chargesheet has been filed against 16 accused who are alleged to have directly participated in the murder and conspiracy. The trial against these accused is being conducted in the first phase.

The trial of accused numbers 17 to 26 is not part of the current phase because a final report has not been submitted against them. Earlier, the High Court had dismissed a petition filed by the accused currently facing trial, who had argued, among other things, that the proceedings against them were not fair because a final report had not been submitted against the remaining accused.

The High Court has also directed that the trial be completed by December 6.

Earlier, the accused had sought exemption from appearing in person when the newly framed charge was read out to them. The court had rejected that request.
