Kabul: Malayalam travel vlogger Arunima said she was detained by Taliban members in Bamyan, Afghanistan, and later released following discussions. Her statement came after she posted an urgent message on social media seeking help to contact the Indian Embassy. About three hours later, she informed followers that she had been released following discussions with Taliban members.

Arunima initially shared the information through her Facebook page, ‘Backpacker Arunima’. She also posted an image of a message that she claimed was a translation of an official communication from local authorities. According to the message, she had been arrested because she did not have an official letter. Arunima also wrote on social media that she was in trouble in Afghanistan and was in Bamyan.

Her initial post did not provide details about the circumstances of the alleged arrest or the people who had taken her into custody. At the time, there was no response to the incident from Indian authorities in Kabul or New Delhi.

In a detailed post shared later on social media, Arunima said officials in Bamyan told her that women were not allowed to travel alone and that she would be arrested for violating the rules. She said special permission was required to travel to each province and that, as a woman travelling alone, she had not been given a permit. Arunima also said that she had earlier been denied a permit in Jalalabad for the same reason.

After being warned that she would be arrested, Arunima said she became frightened and contacted a person who had earlier helped her reach Bamyan. According to her, the person spoke to the authorities on her behalf.

Arunima said the authorities required her to obtain a permit and travel with a guide. She said she was eventually allowed to proceed to her next destination following discussions.

When she informed the authorities that she planned to travel from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan, they allegedly told her that she had to pay a fine because she had remained in the country for several days without following the rules. Arunima said she was also told that she would not be allowed to continue her journey without paying the fine.
