**Kochi:** Fisherwoman and social media influencer Thamburu K.K. , a native of Kattikkunnu Thuruthu in Chempu, Vaikom, who gained lakhs of followers through videos showcasing traditional fishing methods, was found dead at her rented house in Pulinchuvadu, Vaikom, yesterday afternoon. Her 13-year-old daughter, who returned home from school around 5 pm, found her mother inside the house. Vaikom police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Following the postmortem, Thamburu’s body was taken to her ancestral home at Kattikkunnu, where the funeral was held.

Thamburu had been living separately from her husband. According to the report, she decided to bring her traditional livelihood of catching fish by hand in front of the camera as a response to alleged defamatory campaigns against her. She launched social media pages under the name ‘Queen Fisher’, and the first fishing video she shared reportedly received more than 9 million views. She later gained a large following on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Thamburu had brought to a wider audience the traditional fishing method that had been followed by her family for generations. After completing her Class 10 education, she began fishing with her mother. The income from fishing helped her complete the education of her younger siblings.

Along with fishing, Thamburu worked in employment guarantee schemes, a driving school and a garment manufacturing unit. She also continued traditional fishing. During high tide, she and her family would travel into the backwaters by boat and search for fish by hand in mud and between rocks, without using nets or fishing rods.

Her family and friends had alleged that mental harassment by a friend from Palakkad whom she met online was responsible for her death. According to relatives and friends, the person had established a relationship with Thamburu through social media, subjected her to severe mental pressure and prevented her from filming and posting videos. Relatives also said she had recently required treatment due to the alleged mental harassment. Police said they would investigate these allegations.
